Man has known to make pottery for use as household utensils or ritual vessels since prehistoric times. Since the invention of pottery, methods have developed in many ways. For example, the method of preparing paste, the techniques of forming as well as decorating the ware have undergone many refinements. Around the late 14th century, Thai ceramics were fine enough to be exported to other foreign countries, thus providing great benefit to the country. The design patterns and shapes of Chinese and Vietnamese export ceramics have influenced on Thai ceramics. Finally, they developed their own remarkable stylistic character.
Several parts of Thailand have found large quantities of ceramic remains of several kinds, and periods, and of various styles not native to Thailand. This, therefore, testifies to the fact that, in addition to being an ancient kingdom where communities of highly-cultured people have long settled. The ceramics discovered in Thailand can thus be divided into two main groups as follows: ceramics produced in the Thai Kingdom and ceramics produced in foreign countries.
